Comptroller And Auditor General (CAG) Pay Scale, Salary And Perks

Comptroller and Auditor General, popularly known as the CAG of India is Constitutional body. It is mentioned in the Article 148 of Indian Constitution. This department looks after and audits all expenditures of both central and state authorities. Apart from internal audits, the CAG also has to take care of auditing requirements of such organizations, which are owned by the government. Public Accounts Committees and Committees on Public Undertakings depend on the reports, issued from the office of Comptroller And Auditor General. All tasks, which are taken up by the Indian Audit and Accounts Department, fall under the responsibility of the CAG. The post holder has to ensure that all audit reports are error free. Without the signature and seal of the officer, these reports will not hold any ground.

Monthly salary of the CAG

Every appointed CAG receives Rs. 25,000 on a monthly basis. This monthly salary does not include additional perks.

Yearly salary of the CAG

The yearly salary that the Indian Comptroller And Auditor General receives is Rs. 300,000. The pay scale of the CAG and the judges of Supreme Court are same. All decisions, regarding the increase in the salary will be made by the special committee of the Indian Government.

Additional benefits and pension

Similar to the judge of Supreme Court, the CAG is also a salaried government employee. The person, holding this position will attain several additional benefits, offered by central government. He/she will attain monetary allowance for meeting daily transportation cost. They also attain housing and dearness allowances. Medical benefits, both during and after tenure also fall in this benefit list. Apart from this, the CAG will also attain a pension, after he/she retires from office.

Role and responsibility of CAG

  1. Maintains expenditure reports – The primary task of the Comptroller And Auditor General of India is to keep all expenditure related reports up to date. Auditing the accounts of every government department is a mammoth task. If falls on the shoulders of the Comptroller And Auditor General of India.
  2. Accounting and stock keeping – Keeping records of all government accounts, along with maintaining record of stocks are two other tasks that the CAG performs. These records make it easy to access the overall expenditure of the government departments.
  3. Keeps track of government companies – The central and the state government takes over several companies. There are other agencies, which are run by the authority since their inception. It is the responsibility of the CAG to audit the accounts of these companies, and submit reports,
  4. Details of corporations – Sometimes, Parliamentary laws pave the path for the formation of some corporations. These are done for the smooth operation of the legislation. CAG is plays the primary part in the creation of these corporations.
  5. Consolidated Fund details – Both the union and state authorities have their respective Consolidated Funds. Monetary grant, offered to several bodies come from this fund. The CAG must keep track of these grants, and submit reports accordingly.
  6. Government loan details – The central as well as the state government offers loans to government and private agencies. Keeping track of these loans, starting from the application to repayment, is the job of the CAG. In case of not payment of interest, the CAG can take necessary legal steps.
  7. Entrusted audits – Technical Guidance & Support or TGS has adequate provision for entrusted audits. These audits are carried out in the Panchayati Raj establishments and local bodies, which come under urban legislation. It is the responsibility of the CAG to prepare and maintain these reports.
